Pudhupettai,

Best Indian film of 2006 to date, so what if it is not a runaway box office
(but it has been declared a hit -
http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-news/june-06-02/16-06-06-pudupettai.html ),
a few portions of it are are timeless. For starters the wall scene, for those who are new-"
Kokki Kumar(Dhanush), in his endless means of survival to achieve his ends is the core of the film. The ends he achieves are totally drastic, he's sealed behind bar's- eventually crippling himself- become's a big shot in the ruling party's circles, marries the girl of his choice(Sneha- who's a prostitute ) in the flm, also marries Sonia ( rather selva's directorial niche involved here ) purely for lust , draws even by burying his own father to death- for killing his mother"

So, where was I ? yes the wall scene, kumar a relatively new additon to the rowdy gang, sets out to stick party posters in the opposition party area. All's well until the oppositon rowdies along with the main head square them up against a big wall. Next scene, no jumping over wall, no hypertensile graphic stunts, no punch dialogues. Kumar tries to climb the wall with all his might, but only ends up scratching it - which makes everybody laugh, but the spirit of survival exibited here is of mamoth proportions. Eventually he becomes the main rowdy in the circle- A real prestigious position.

Next scene, its a busy market place, both for flesh trade and for drug trafficking, this scene is sparked of where sneha and Kokki facing each others back, one trying to lure a customer to sleep with and one trying to sell off drugs to anybody willing to buy.Its again the means to achive ends - survival which is sparked off here.

The highlight, when Kokki abandons his child along with a lot of cash in the dustbin, He tells him "Be Alive - thats the most important thing and everything else will follow".Wow thats a great message isn't it?

Biggest Dissapointments:

Oru nallil song - what a song, the lyrics here can be equated to linkin park's classics, but how did it miss out being filmed?
Sonia - was highly underutilized in the film, her acting skills were not put on full throttle.

Recommendations:

Listen to Oru Nallil song atleast once a day.
Watch the first half of the film - its pure magic.

Rare Distinctions:

Pudhupettai is India's 1st D-Cinema release

D-Cinema is a standard defined by Hollywood for digital cinema servers and digital cinema projectors with defined security standards, compression formats, contrast ratios, brightness on screen and colour gamut. In other words, D-cinema is the term used to denote Hollywood studio-approved digital cinema systems
